Overview

The Industrial End Of Shrink

LDPE Shrink Film is the heavy-gauge, high-shrink-force end of the range. Where polyolefin wraps a single retail pack, LDPE bundles twenty-four bottles into a tray-less pack, or drops over an entire pallet and shrinks down into a sealed, weatherproof hood.

Its strength is shrink force. On heating it contracts hard and holds, which is what compresses a bundle of cans or bottles into a rigid block that can be stacked, and what pulls a pallet hood tight enough to keep driven rain out of a load standing in a yard.

It is the standard bundling film for beverage, the standard hooding film for exposed pallet loads, and the economical choice wherever a pack needs to be held and protected rather than displayed.

Why It Works

Key Features

High shrink force

Contracts hard on heating to compress a bundle into a rigid, stackable block.

Heavy-duty strength

Thick-gauge construction that survives forklift handling, racking and road transport.

Full weather protection

A shrunk pallet hood sheds driven rain and dust from a load standing outdoors.

Wide sealing window

Tolerant of tunnel temperature variation, which suits high-speed bundling lines.

UV grades available

UV-stabilised film for pallet hoods that will stand in direct sun for months.

Clear, tinted or printed

Opaque and printed grades for branded bundles or concealed pallet loads.

Economical per pack

The lowest film cost per bundled unit in the shrink range.

Recyclable material

Single-polymer polyethylene, recyclable through standard PE film streams.

Colour Variations

Available Colours

LDPE shrink is produced clear, in white and black, and in the tinted range. On a bundled multipack the film is the pack’s outer surface, so colour here is as much about how the unit presents on a shelf as about concealment.

Clear / Natural The standard. Maximum transparency so barcodes and case labels stay scannable through the wrap. Standard
Black Fully opaque. Conceals pallet contents end to end — the usual choice where pilferage is a risk. Standard
White Opaque and heat-reflective, which helps on pallets staged in the open before dispatch. Standard
Blue High-visibility colour coding — commonly used to mark a route, a round or a customer. Standard
Green Clear separation from blue on the warehouse floor; often used for quality-passed stock. Standard
Red Reads as a stop signal at distance — suits damaged, quarantined or hold pallets. To order
Yellow The highest-contrast tint in the range against dark racking and dim aisles. To order
Purple Rarely used elsewhere in a warehouse, so it never collides with an existing colour code. To order

Standard colours are produced routinely and carry the normal minimum order. Colours marked to order, and any bespoke tint, need a dedicated production run — the minimum is higher and the shade is matched against a sample before we schedule it. Opacity, gauge and stretch performance are held level with the clear grade in every colour.

Specialty Options

Built To Your Specification

Bundling and hooding film is built around the load. Printed film is common on beverage multipacks, and UV stabilisation is close to mandatory on an outdoor pallet hood.

Printed Film Your mark or a handling instruction repeated down the web, subject to order volume.
UV Resistant A stabiliser package built into the resin, rated for months of direct sun instead of weeks.
Heavy-Duty Gauge Thicker construction for sharp-edged, protruding or unusually dense loads.
Coloured Pigmented through the melt in any of the colours above — opacity for security, tint for coding.

Performance Characteristics

Industrial shrink is judged on whether the bundle holds and the hood stays sealed. These are the properties that decide it.

Shrink force

High

The residual contraction force after cooling. This, more than shrink ratio, is what compresses a bundle into a block that can be stacked three high.

Shrink ratio

50 – 70% MD

Directional shrink, deliberately biased along the machine direction for bundling and hooding geometry.

Seal strength

Very high

Force the seal withstands before peeling. On a pallet hood the seal carries the weight of the film through the shrink cycle.

Tear resistance

Very high

Resistance to a nick propagating — critical on a hood that is dragged over pallet corners before it is shrunk.

Puncture resistance

Very high

Impact energy absorbed at protruding corners and edges, which is what heavy-gauge LDPE is bought for.

Film memory

High

Strong elastic recovery on heating, giving the hard, drum-tight finish on a bundled pack.

Optical clarity

Medium

Lower than polyolefin and deliberately so — this is a protective film, and opaque and printed grades are common.

Weather resistance

Full hood seal

A correctly shrunk hood sheds driven rain and dust; UV-stabilised grades hold that seal through months outdoors.

Performance values are typical for the standard grade and vary with gauge, wrapping method and load profile. Ask for the test report covering your specification.

Compatible With

Equipment Compatibility

LDPE shrink runs hotter and longer than polyolefin. Confirm your tunnel specification and film format — sheet, tubing or gusseted hood — when you enquire.

Bundling wrappersSemi-automatic and automatic shrink bundlers for cans, bottles and cartons.
Shrink tunnelsHigh-output hot-air tunnels rated for heavy-gauge polyethylene.
Pallet hooding machinesAutomatic hood applicators and shrink frames for full pallet loads.
Shrink gunsHand-held gas or electric guns for low-volume hooding and site work.
Choosing A Grade

Choosing Between The Shrink Film Grades

Three shrink film grades. LDPE is the one to specify when the job is holding and protecting rather than displaying.
